Charlie & the Tropicales

Charlie Halloran’s Tropicales bring a 1950s Caribbean hotel party to life with torrid horns, tropical rhythms, and infectious grooves. With a nod to New Orleans’ history as the northernmost port of the Caribbean, the Tropicales perform music from Trinidad, Venezuela, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and other destinations along the archipelago.

As jazz pioneer Jelly Roll Morton famously said, New Orleans music carries a “Spanish tinge,” an essential seasoning in the city’s musical DNA. The Tropicales embrace this spirit, blending traditional New Orleans jazz with 1950s R&B, beguine from the French Antilles, and Trinidadian calypso — a sound that feels both timeless and irresistibly danceable. Their albums have received international praise, including recognition in OffBeat Magazine’s top 50 Louisiana recordings.

Led by trombonist Charlie Halloran, twice named a “Rising Star” in Downbeat Magazine and a multi-time honoree in Offbeat Magazine’s “Best of the Beat” awards, the Tropicales bring world-class musicianship and unmistakable New Orleans soul to every performance. Charlie’s impressive resume includes recording and performing with Jon Cleary (on the Grammy-winning Go-Go Juice and Dynamite), U2, Allen Toussaint, the O’Jays, Rickie Lee Jones, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers, among many others. He has toured nationally and internationally, appeared at major festivals, and contributed to countless studio and film projects including HBO’s Treme and NCIS: New Orleans.

Charlie and the Tropicales deliver an unmistakable experience for private events: elegant, high-energy, and deeply rooted in the rich cultural blend that defines New Orleans. Their performances bring warmth and authenticity to every stage, combining New Orleans sophistication with vibrant Caribbean energy.
